Project Overview

High-voltage shore supply works were undertaken at Loch Goil to install a new subsea electrical connection from the onshore network to a barge moored offshore. The project enabled the delivery of reliable shore power to marine infrastructure, reducing reliance on onboard generation.

The installation commenced with preparation of the shore landing point, including controlled setup of the cable drum and routing from the onshore transformer connection to the waterline. A 3-core XLPE/SWA 3.6 kV 50mm² cable incorporating fibre cores and drain wires was deployed to form the subsea connection.

Termination works were completed at both ends of the circuit. Onshore, the cable was connected to the existing transformer infrastructure through a sealed and mechanically protected joint. Offshore, terminations were completed within an enclosure on the anchored barge, ensuring protection against moisture ingress, corrosion, and mechanical strain.

All joints and terminations were completed to high-voltage standards, followed by HV pressure testing and full inspection to verify integrity prior to energisation.

Cabling Services Delivered

  • Installation of subsea shore supply cable from onshore transformer to offshore barge
  • 3 no. 3.6 kV HV terminations (50mm² 3-core XLPE/SWA with fibre cores)
  • 1 no. HV termination at existing onshore transformer
  • 2 no. HV terminations within enclosure on anchored barge
  • Sealing and mechanical protection of all joints and terminations
  • Integration with barge electrical distribution system
  • HV pressure testing and inspection
  • Verification prior to energisation

Project Outcome

The offshore HV supply was successfully installed and commissioned, providing a secure and reliable shore power connection to the barge at Loch Goil. All works were completed in compliance with high-voltage standards, ensuring safe operation within a marine environment subject to moisture and mechanical exposure.
